In November of 1998, NMT opened its AutoFish office located near the Anacortes, Washington airport. The office contains the engineers, production and support staff whose job is to build, maintain and enhance NMT's AutoFish technology. Today, millions of fish are marked and tagged individually by hand. This process requires many workers, the use of anesthetic to temporarily immobilize the fish, and extensive human handling. AutoFish technology uses a series of infrared sensors, cameras, computers, water flow and the fish's own movement to accomplish this task without the use of anesthetics or human handling.
