Abstract | A recent article (Champigneulle and Escomel, 1984) described the possibility of definitively marking salmonids of small size (3-5 cm) by cutting the adipose fin or mutilating the two pelvic fins. However the technique of ablating the two pelvic fins does not allow differentiation between batches without introducing biases. The use of the technique of marking with coded microtags injected in the nasal cartilage, then magnetized, was developed elsewhere (Leary and Murphy, 1975; Harache et al. 1978; Opdyke and Zajac, 1981; Thrower and Smoker, 1984; Hargreaves and Lebrasseur, 1986; Meng et al., 1986; Salojarvi, 1986). The technique began to be used in France by the CSP in Brittany on Atlantic salmon smolts and by INRA on salmonid alevins: trout, arctic char and Coregomus. The purpose of this paper is to present the first experimental results on the use of magnetic marks on very small sized (2.2-5.5 cm) char: the methods used, influence on survival and growth and tag loss. |
